This is the first time I'm participating in Click, and of the several tens of photographs I clicked for this event, this seemed the best. I cast it in sepia because it's one of the oldest breakfasts I know and the appliances in this photo - the idli stand and the pressure cooker - are hoary old fixtures in most South Indian homes.
My recipe for idlis is one of the easiest, and fail-proof: Buy the batter from the store, oil the idli stand, fill it with some batter and steam it for about 10-12 minutes in the pressure cooker. Let cool and unmould. :-D

ReplyDeletewe live in a remote corner of the universe where no one sells idli batter. some people are just spoilt rotten. :D
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pic, Sra! Love the way you've added the effects to make it look antique. :)
ReplyDeleteNice pic sra...BTW my idli policy is same as yours but it takes me more time in the pressure cooker also I remove the weight of the cooker while steaming. Is that the right way and why does it take a while for me ?

Sunita, thanks ;)
Bee, I suppose so, yes :)
Kalai, thank you.
Sandeepa, yeah, we don't use the weight. I don't know why it takes longer, though - could differ from pressure cooker to p cooker, I suppose. But considering I'm the kind who buys idli batter, you're probably knocking on the wrong door for troubleshooting :)
Seena, way to go! :) :)
Nice idli recipe, Sra;) My idlis get cooked in exactly 5 minutes in the cooker, any reason why yours takes longer? Couldn't view the picture, will have to find out why...
ReplyDeleteantique finish to it!
ReplyDeleteThe sepia gives it a nice touch Sra... an oft-used metal at my place too.

Great idea on using sepia! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteValli, thanks :)
ReplyDeleteJyothsna, no clue - I'm the kind who buys the batter, remember, so no insights into its mysterious ways :)
Rachel, yeah, darker than the sepia I imagine would be nice, but nice all the same.
Laavanya, I rarely make idlis, maybe once in 10 days for the Spouse to microwave a couple for breakfast :)
Nags, yes, it is!
TC, thanks, ;)
Todd & Diane, thanks.
Love sepia, always have. Sra, can idli be steamed in a very large covered soup cauldron? I'd love a pressure cooker, but my kitchen will turn me out into the street if I bring home another appliance.
